Fighting DICK Cheney’s War…..

In the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military-industrial complex.  The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will persist.’  —  President Dwight D. Eisenhower,  January 17, 1961

So, we’re sending another 30,000 troops to Afghanistan…

After much agonizing, President Obama picked what he perceives as the best of several bad options dealing with Afghanistan–one of many botched endeavors left for him to clean up–courtesy of the previous administration.

Is it the right decision to add more troops now, so we can pull out sooner?  We will find out in the next two years…  As the war in Afghanistan–in its eighth year–has shifted more and more to the border region between that country and Pakistan, and inside Pakistan itself, this troop increase sends a clear message to Pakistan, to crack down more seriously on the extremists who have found a new home there.

Unfortunately, poll after poll shows, that the Afghan people view us as occupiers, fighting against them.  Therefore, it is imperative, that with this troop increase, other measures are employed to change hearts and minds.  Something, the Obama administration is committed to do.

As for DICK Cheney…  He came out of his bunker on the eve of President Obama’s speech to attack him–in his very special way–basically accusing him, among other things, of treason…

Maybe it’s necessary to revisit recent history–about twenty years of it…

After supporting and supplying the Taliban and foreign fighters (Al-Qaeda), including Osama Bin Laden, with weapons in their decade-long fight against the Soviets, we made the decision to leave them to flourish in Afghanistan in 1991, under then Secretary of Defense Dick Cheney.  During the nineties, those same fighters turned their energy against the very people who supported them–us–leading to various attacks, culminating of course in 9/11.

After that attack, it was the right thing to do to go into Afghanistan, fighting the people who planned and executed it, and the people harboring them.  It was the wrong thing to do, to let Bin Laden escape when he was cornered in Tora Bora–intentionally–as a recently released report shows, in order to help justify the Iraq War.  It was also wrong to attack Iraq, a country that was not involved in 9/11.  So, we’re talking about three major decisions that were made for other than publicly stated reasons… and were fundamentally  WRONG.

The common denominator in all those decisions…  DICK Cheney

My suggestion is this…  Before opening your mouth again, and accusing a president, who is left with the daunting task of cleaning up your mess, with treason–why not revisiting the last twenty years that have led to this point?

You don’t have to look far… it’s right there… at your doorstep!!

Will Smith, Meet Urkel ….. :-)

President
Barack Obama

Well, by all accounts, President Obama’s (Non) State of the Union Address has been received very positively across party lines.  I certainly liked it.  For once, I have a feeling that we listened to somebody who has an understanding of complex issues, and will tackle the enormous problems we are facing with common sense pragmatism.  That alone is refreshing.

The terrible state of our economy will present President Obama with an opportunity to push through major policies that are actually beneficial for the average person, not unlike FDR was able to do during a time of crisis.  And if his speech is any indication, we will see some major changes, from laying the ground work for some kind of Universal Health Care, to making major progress in the areas of energy independence and education reform, to bringing combat troops home from Iraq, etc.

With his overwhelming election victory and high approval ratings, he will have the wind in his back, and a lot of big things Democrats have been wanting to do for a long time, are all of a sudden on the table.  As the Republican Party with their spiritual leader Rush Limbaugh, are becoming more and more irrelevant, the public in the latest poll clearly stated that we want President Obama to lead on all issues, and the Republicans to work constructively with him and Democrats.  That of course hasn’t happened so far, and my suggestion to them is just this:  If you continue your ‘Just say no’ approach, you do it at your own peril, as we are very tired of it, and things are too bad out here to mess around right now.  We thought we sent you a message in the last election.  Just in case you didn’t get it, we will send it again in the next election…

Governor
Bobby Jindal

As for Gov. Jindal who gave the Republican response…  We’ve already heard enough criticism from each side, even most conservatives, so I will just let that stand.  But to suggest that the Federal Government in a time of crisis and people’s unease, and the private sector failing, has no role to play, when it is right now the only entity that can get this economy going again, is totally tone deaf.  So he was a perfect representative of today’s Republican Party…..  🙂

Sen. Jim Bunning, R-KY: Ignorance On Display

Senator Jim Bunning

Boy, why does it seem that every time Kentucky makes national political news, it has to do with the ignorance and idiocy of one or both of our Republican Senators who unfortunately are representing the good people of Kentucky in the US Senate?

Latest example, Sen. Jim Bunning, whose mental fitness was already in question during his last re-election campaign, because of some very odd and strange behavior, now has totally gone off the cliff.  In remarks over the weekend, for which he has apologized in the meantime, he affirmed his support for conservative judges by mentioning that one of the liberal judges on the Supreme Court, Ruth Bader Ginsberg is suffering from pancreatic cancer and Jim Bunning, with the charm he is known for, predicted her death before the year is out, and I quote  “Ruth Bader Ginsberg suffers from cancer…bad cancer…the kind you don’t get better from…the kind you don’t live past nine months…”

First of all, has he spent the time since election day in the Kentucky Hinterlands without access to any news coverage?  If so, will somebody please let him know that we have a new sheriff in town by the name of Barack Obama who is not about to appoint a conservative judge to the Supreme Court if a vacancy should open up, no matter how much the good senator from Kentucky loves conservative judges.

It is well known here in Kentucky, that Sen. Jim Bunning suffers from a lack of intellectual curiosity, and regularly displays the insensitivity of an unsophisticated putz.  I guess he just can’t help himself and feels the need to prove his critics right from time to time, and his latest comment certainly fits that bill.

Now, a little bird told me that the National Republican Party is really tired of Sen. Bunning’s escapades, ineffectiveness, and questionable mental fitness, and is trying to challenge his seat with another Republican when he is up for re-election in 2010.  That should make for an interesting spectacle and soap opera…

I just hope that the good people of Kentucky are finally embarrassed enough to elect a wonderful Democrat to represent us, somebody, we can actually be proud of, somebody like our Attorney General Jack Conway…

And as far as Jim Bunning:  He suffers from ignorance…bad ignorance…the kind you don’t get better from…  🙂
