Didn’t you also have a warm and fuzzy feeling in your heart when watching the wonderful reception President Obama and his lovely wife received all over Europe?  I certainly did…  And didn’t it feel good to see somebody on the international stage, who can speak in complete sentences, using correct grammar, is well respected, and knows the meaning of the word  ‘diplomacy’ … for a change … ?

Here’s a headline I saw in a European paper that pretty much sums it all up in my opinion:

Sure, there will be a lot of issues to deal with, and old and new problems to be solved, but I had the distinct feeling that other world leaders want President Obama to succeed, because they know that America’s success is directly linked to the success of their own countries ….. and they genuinely seem to like him ….. which is always helpful.  🙂

It was very interesting, to see even protesters who are fed up with the global financial crisis, expressing positive feelings about America under this new president’s leadership ….. and you know what was missing??  The burning of American flags or Bush’s effigy, etc.  And that’s a good thing …..  🙂

I think this was a very successful start to a changing American image in the world, and now we can build on that, and actually get things done in concert with other nations ….. now that’s a novel thought …..  🙂

I can’t help but looking at all this with a little smile on my face ….. and hope in my heart for better days ahead …..

Barack and Michelle:  We are very proud of you!  JOB  WELL  DONE !!!  🙂

Rush Limbaugh: ‘I Want Obama To Fail!’

‘We’re not sexists, we’re chauvinists–we’re male chauvinist pigs, and we’re happy to be because we think that’s what men were destined to be.  We think that’s what women want.’ — Rush Limbaugh, Three-Time-Divorcee, Addict, Self-Proclaimed Chauvinist Pig, and Spiritual Leader of the Republican Party

Just when we thought that with the election of Barack Obama and the exit of George W. Bush, our good work would be over, we are being reminded, yet again, how much is still left to be done, one idiot at a time.

Case in point, Rush Limbaugh, spiritual leader of the Republican Party, three-time divorcee, addict, and self-proclaimed chauvinist pig, had to put his ignorance on public display again.  At a time when we have come together as  ONE  to tackle all the tremendous problems we are faced with, and President Obama enjoys the support of between 70 and 80% of the population, which, I may add, includes a lot of people who didn’t vote for him, some people on the Extremist Right-Wing Nutjob Base of the Republican Party just can’t help themselves.  Normal people, sensing the seriousness of these times, not only for America, but the World, want things to improve and President Obama to succeed, because it will mean improving their own lives as well.  But not Rush …..

‘I  WANT  OBAMA  TO   FAIL!’ — Rush Limbaugh

….. And with that, you also want America to fail!

Faced with the prospect of badly needed government regulation and oversight, and a stimulus plan that will actually create jobs, the likes of Rush Limbaugh just don’t seem to get it.  The lack of oversight and the  ‘anything goes’  attitude were part of the reasons that got us into this mess to begin with.  So, if President Obama sees the need to bring some sanity to our lives, which includes oversight and regulation, and reversing all the horrible policies of the Bush era, that’s how it’s going to be!  Even normal Conservatives, who usually advocate for smaller government, understand that.

Here’s my message to Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Ann Coulter et all:

Or, as President Obama said much more eloquently when being faced with griping by some Congressional Republicans in reference to his stimulus plan:

‘I  WON !’ — President Barack Obama

That’s right ….. Elections have consequences ….. And thank God, in this case positive consequences, now that we have smart people in charge!

Message to Congressional Republicans:  We overwhelmingly elected President Obama and want him to do what he thinks is necessary to get us out of the ditch the Bush administration, with your help, has gotten us into.  If you want to continue to obstruct, we will vote you out in a heartbeat!

Happiness Is …..
Appreciating The
Awesomeness Of  This
Historic Moment

‘When The Nation Is Threatened, The Statesman Appears.’ — Tao Te Ching

What better symbolism than to have Barack Obama’s Inauguration one day after we celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King’s birthday?  Black and White people have come together as  ONE  to see King’s dream fulfilled at this memorable moment in time.

As a large crowd gathered in Washington, DC to be part of history, didn’t you also feel the positive vibes and happy feelings all around you?  It’s quite amazing if you think about it, considering the terrible times we are in, and the hardship many people are feeling right now!  This man, Barack Obama, who people in Africa consider the first ‘African President,’ has inspired so much optimism and hope for a better day, not only in America, but around the world.  How does he do it?  And how does he remain so cool, calm and collected, simply the ‘Calmest Guy in the Room,’ despite all the major challenges we are faced with?

On Inauguration Day, the six-year-old black kid saw a black president with his family moving into the White House, and things will never be the same.  The thought that you can be anything you want to be, will manifest itself in that little guy’s head, and he will grow up to see the world around him in a totally different light.

His 80-year-old grandma who like many others remembers the struggle, and never thought she would see the day a black president would be elected, can happily say from now on  ‘Yes, in my lifetime!  I have seen America, Black and White, coming together and not only fulfilling MLK’s dream but electing the best person stepping forward, not only for America, but the world.  An inspirational leader with a first class temperament and intellect!’  I cannot even begin to understand the pride and joy black people of her generation must feel.

The fifteen-year-old Muslim teenager in Pakistan realizes that America can’t be so bad after all, if they overwhelmingly elected a black person with the name Barack Hussein Obama, who looks like much of the rest of the world.  America’s face to the world has changed in an instant on election day, and all of a sudden, it has become much more difficult for the likes of Al-Qaeda to paint America as this big demon that needs to be defeated.  And if that’s a first step toward changing hearts and minds in the Middle East, then we’re off to a successful start.

And people around the globe, especially in Europe and Africa, are looking at this with complete awe and amazement.  I cannot tell you the stories I read in overseas papers and heard from friends, of scenes of joy and happiness, people celebrating in the streets, much like here, on election day.  And now it’s an even more profound feeling of joy since Obama has been inaugurated.

All Americans, who at times felt hostility when traveling to other countries, and even being questioned about what has been going on in America over the past eight years, will again be able to proudly say, as a friend of mine recently did while on business in Europe  ‘Yes, I am an American.  And proud of it!’  You may be surprised by the response.  As in my friend’s case, the little old lady behind the counter in a bakery in a small French town, came around, gave him a kiss on his forehead and said  ‘We’re so proud of you and Obama!’

And who wants to argue with that?

It’s a beautiful day!

Obama 1, Al-Qaeda 0

images112                    images

So, the other day the world was subjected to another PR offensive by Al-Qaeda’s #2, trying to influence impressionable people in the Muslim world with their twisted ideology, yet again.  Only this time, the lead character of Al-Qaeda’s nemesis has changed and listening to #2’s diatribe, that seems to cause them a little heartburn.

Trying to convince others that America, where a black man with the name Barack Hussein Obama who looks like much of the rest of the world, was just overwhelmingly elected, is this terrible place that needs to be defeated, all of a sudden has become a lot more difficult and just doesn’t jive anymore.  And they know it.  The insults thrown at Obama, from calling him a ‘House Negro’ to show casing him as an agent of Jews, clearly show that they feel they are losing the PR battle.

America’s face to the world changed in a very dramatic fashion on election day.  And something quite remarkable happened.  The fifteen-year-old Muslim teenager in Pakistan all of a sudden realized that if America can elect Barack Obama, it can’t be so bad after all.  And with the coming changes of policies and attitudes toward the rest of the world, that new positive feeling will only intensify and America will once again become the beacon of hope for so many around the world.

Now, does that mean that we won’t face any more threats from the likes of Al-Qaeda?  Certainly not.  When animals are cornered, they are usually the most dangerous, and there may well be an effort to reassert themselves, but one thing is already clear:  They are losing the grip on power over certain segments of society in the Muslim world and with that they will have problems recruiting new members and may well face a backlash from the very people they have been popular with up until now.

I never liked the term ‘War on terror.’  I’d much prefer ‘Fighting terrorism,’ as it is a tactic and in my mind can only be defeated by a combination of good intelligence and police work, some limited military action when necessary, and the changing of hearts and minds in the process.  However, if this current trend is continuing, we’ll be well on our way to destroying the very network that has brought so much pain and despair to the entire world and Al-Qaeda (The Base) won’t have a base to recruit from anymore.  And this may just become one of the most important accomplishments of Barack Obama’s presidency.

Message From WORLD: ‘We Are All Obamas Now!’

‘Voters said no to incompetence and divisiveness and elbowed their way past the blight of racism that has been such a barrier to progress for so long.  Barack Obama won the state of North Carolina, for crying out loud.  The nation deserves to take a bow.  This is not the same place it used to be.’ — Bob Herbert, Columnist

By illustrator Patrick Moberg, as seen on

‘Obviously, a lot of shelter dogs are mutts, like me.’   🙂  —  Barack Obama discussing which dog to get for his two girls.

Don’t you also feel the calm that has set in since election day?  A lot of people seem to have smiles on their faces, no matter how bad their personal situation is, because now there’s hope.  Or as Jon Stewart joked on the ‘Daily Show:’  ‘People walking around in New York, smiling and trying to make eye contact, are making me nervous.’   🙂

By now, most everybody here has probably seen the expressions of joy at Obama’s victory from people all over the world and realized that most everybody in other countries hoped for an Obama victory as well.  Everybody just wants America to return to the promise of being a beacon of hope again.

The following is very personal anecdotal evidence of how things have started to change in an instant on election night.  My friend M. has been traveling to Europe for business pretty frequently over the past decade or so and found himself overseas on election day as well (of course he voted early   🙂 ).  I remember him telling me of situations after Bush got elected in 2000 and even worse, after he got re-elected in 2004, where he found himself being questioned by people overseas like this ‘How in the world could America have elected such an idiot?’  M., after trying to explain that about half of America, including himself, did not vote for Bush, finally gave up, frankly, because he was tired of trying to explain the unexplainable. So he took the easy way out most of the time and answered when asked whether he was American ‘No, I’m Canadian,’ and with that avoiding heated discussions.

Now, M. was of course aware that most all of Europe, as the rest of the world, was wishing for an Obama victory and he told me of amazing scenes where Europeans celebrated Obama’s victory as much as people did in the streets of America.  What really impressed him, though, were his personal experiences.  He told me about the woman behind the counter in a little bakery, who after he took a chance when asked whether he was American by saying ‘Yes, I am.  And proud of it today!’ coming around to him, embracing him, and giving him a kiss on his forehead with the words ‘We’re so proud of you and Obama!’  And he mentioned quite a few instances like that and ended his email with this

….. Ditto!   🙂

Over the past few days I have read numerous stories like that from Americans overseas and have seen people from all continents, with very diverse backgrounds and faiths, being overjoyed by what has happened in America and we all should be very proud!

You know what was missing?  I didn’t see anybody burning American flags anywhere ….. And that’s a good thing!   🙂

Drunk With Happiness: We’ve Made History!

Tuesday, November 4th, 2008 — A Day To Remember

….. Yes, in our lifetime!

In the battle for ‘America’s Soul’ we chose

HOPE over FEAR, UNITY over DIVISION, and the promise of CHANGE over the power of the STATUS QUO!

As I was sitting here with tears of pride and joy in my eyes when the election results came in, I could only imagine the emotions of especially older black people who remember the struggle, to now see the first black president in their lifetime.  Everybody, no matter how you voted, should feel very proud today!  We have chosen the person we think is the right man at the right time, not only for the US, but the world.  An inspirational leader with a first class temperament and intellect!

With this overwhelming win, the American people clearly gave Obama a broad mandate for his policy ideas, and by reaching out to Republicans, and working successfully with increased majorities of Democrats in the House and Senate, he will become the great transformational president he is poised to be.  We may actually enter an era similar to FDR’s with a realignment of the electorate for decades to come.

Message to the other side:  Stop the hate and appreciate the awesomeness of this historic moment.  And after deep soul-searching, please join us and let’s work together.  Barack will need all of us to support him in finding common sense solutions to the enormous problems we are facing.

It’s a beautiful day!  And we all can hope again for a better tomorrow.  Yes we can!
