Blood On Their Hands

The Victim                                                 The Suspected Killer
Dr. George Tiller                                        Scott Roeder

Well, we’ve had an act of domestic terrorism.  Al-Qaeda sympathizers?  No, it was committed by somebody who is the prototype of what was described in a recent justice department memo as a right-wing extremist, lone wolf, dedicated to one single issue, in his case his opposition to abortion.

Scott Roeder assassinated Dr. George Tiller, who had been living with threats for many years, and had been the target of right-wing outrage again and again.  To top it, not only was he assassinated in cold blood, but it happened in the sanctity of his church!  What prompted all these targeted attacks, culminating now in his murder?  Dr. Tiller was a women’s health care provider, and as part of that, he performed abortions on women who sought them, including late-term abortions. Something, I want to emphasize, is legal in this country.  So his  ‘crime’  was not doing something illegal, but providing services to women who often are in dire straits when seeking an abortion.

It never fails to amaze me that the most ardent opponents to abortions seem to be older white males.  Here are my thoughts on that:  Unless they find themselves in a situation a lot of women find themselves in at some point in their lives, where they have to make a very personal and painful decision to have an abortion, usually after consulting with a doctor and her family, they have no right to tell women what they can and cannot do.  It is a myth that women take that decision lightly.  Very often, there are extreme circumstances leading a woman to have that procedure done.

We can certainly disagree on that issue, and there are good arguments on both sides of it, and I think President Obama said it best when stating, that we should do everything we possibly can to reduce the number of abortions, including better education about birth control, increasing the possibility of adoption, etc.  But what we cannot do, is trying to make our points using violence.  These extremists have already succeeded with their constant intimidation and violent behavior, that the vast majority of counties in the US has nobody who will perform these legal procedures.  So, a woman, who often doesn’t have a lot of means to begin with, faces the additional burden of having to travel to another location to have that procedure performed.

As a woman, I find it the height of insult when listening to these extremists, decrying especially the procedure referred to as  ‘late-term abortion.’  This procedure is only performed in very rare instances, usually for medical reasons or when the life of the mother is on the line.  As someone who knows a woman who had to go through the ordeal of making that decision, then having it performed, and afterwards having to live with it, it deeply insults me to listen to these zealots. My friend faced the reality of very possibly not surviving the pregnancy because of a medical condition, if carrying the child to term.  So, before people pass judgment on others, there’s some food for thought…

Special mention belongs to the prominent public figures of that movement who have over many years incited violence with their hateful diatribes, and this includes radio and TV personalities and right-wing Republicans.  The entire  FOX  “News” channel, especially the likes of Bill O’Reilly and Sean Hannity, have helped lay the foundation for violent acts by crazies like this guy, by constantly harping on that particular issue in hate filled speech, mentioning Dr Tiller by name, and dubbing him  ‘Dr. Tiller, the Baby Killer.’

What’s In A Handshake?

images-3          images-4          images-5

I’ve been sitting here for a few days now, listening to the right-wing crazies going nuts over President Obama’s handshake with Venezuela’s President Hugo Chavez, describing it as anything from  ‘inappropriate’  to  ‘showing weakness.’

Leaving alone the fact that none of them has a leg to stand on after decades of failed policies in Latin America, and overt and covert interference in those countries’ affairs, mostly committed by Republican administrations, culminating of course in the Iran-Contra Affair under Ronald Reagan, isn’t it a breath of fresh air that President Obama wants to restart interaction with other countries and change those very same failed policies from Venezuela to Cuba?  Something, I might add, he has mentioned repeatedly during his run for the presidency, and obviously the American people agree with him, as we elected him president.

The villain-du-jour for the right-wingers, Hugo Chavez, is certainly a controversial figure, but he is the democratically elected leader of Venezuela, not as we often hear, a  ‘dictator.’  The people of Venezuela elected him with a bigger percentage of the vote than George Bush ever received in either one of his elections, if he indeed was ever elected, despite active interference on behalf of Chavez’ opponent by the Bush administration at the time.  Chavez right now has the approval of 54% of the Venezuelan people, something George Bush hasn’t seen in a very long time.  Whether we like it or not, other countries decide which leaders they elect… sometimes we like them, sometimes we don’t…  But either way, I find it quite refreshing that we have a president who makes an effort to come to a consensus, and work towards a common goal, even with people who we disagree with…  And a little handshake and smile may go a long way to realizing that goal.

Don’t you also find it impressive that we for once have a Democratic president who is not intimidated by Republican criticism on national security matters, but chooses to mock his critics by pointing out how ridiculous they are?  What’s the word again, I’m looking for… ah…  ‘refreshing.’

Here’s President Obama in his own words, mocking his critics:

1.  ‘Venezuela is a country whose defense budget is probably 1/600th of the United States’.  They own Citgo.  It’s unlikely that as a consequence of me shaking hands or having a polite conversation with Mr. Chavez that we are endangering the strategic interests of the United States.  I don’t think anybody can find any evidence that that would do so.  Even within this imaginative crowd,  I think you would be hard-pressed to paint a scenario in which U.S. interests would be damaged as a consequence of us having a more constructive relationship with Venezuela.’ — President Barack Obama

2.  At a press conference in Trinidad:

Dan Lothian (CNN):  ‘During the campaign you were criticized by some within your own party for perhaps not being able to be tough on foreign policy matters.  Now you’ve had this friendly interaction with Mr. Chavez.  Are you concerned at all about how this might be perceived back in the U.S. as perhaps being soft?  Already one senator is calling this friendly interaction irresponsible.  And as a quick follow-up, if I may, when you got the book from Mr. Chavez, what did you really think?’

President Obama:  ‘I think it was a nice gesture to give me a book; I’m a reader.  And you’re right, we had this debate throughout the campaign, and the whole notion was, is that somehow if we showed courtesy or opened up dialogue with governments that had previously been hostile to us, that that somehow would be a sign of weakness.  The American people didn’t buy it.  And there’s a good reason the American people didn’t buy it–because it doesn’t make sense.’

Rush Limbaugh: ‘I Want Obama To Fail!’

‘We’re not sexists, we’re chauvinists–we’re male chauvinist pigs, and we’re happy to be because we think that’s what men were destined to be.  We think that’s what women want.’ — Rush Limbaugh, Three-Time-Divorcee, Addict, Self-Proclaimed Chauvinist Pig, and Spiritual Leader of the Republican Party

Just when we thought that with the election of Barack Obama and the exit of George W. Bush, our good work would be over, we are being reminded, yet again, how much is still left to be done, one idiot at a time.

Case in point, Rush Limbaugh, spiritual leader of the Republican Party, three-time divorcee, addict, and self-proclaimed chauvinist pig, had to put his ignorance on public display again.  At a time when we have come together as  ONE  to tackle all the tremendous problems we are faced with, and President Obama enjoys the support of between 70 and 80% of the population, which, I may add, includes a lot of people who didn’t vote for him, some people on the Extremist Right-Wing Nutjob Base of the Republican Party just can’t help themselves.  Normal people, sensing the seriousness of these times, not only for America, but the World, want things to improve and President Obama to succeed, because it will mean improving their own lives as well.  But not Rush …..

‘I  WANT  OBAMA  TO   FAIL!’ — Rush Limbaugh

….. And with that, you also want America to fail!

Faced with the prospect of badly needed government regulation and oversight, and a stimulus plan that will actually create jobs, the likes of Rush Limbaugh just don’t seem to get it.  The lack of oversight and the  ‘anything goes’  attitude were part of the reasons that got us into this mess to begin with.  So, if President Obama sees the need to bring some sanity to our lives, which includes oversight and regulation, and reversing all the horrible policies of the Bush era, that’s how it’s going to be!  Even normal Conservatives, who usually advocate for smaller government, understand that.

Here’s my message to Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Ann Coulter et all:

Or, as President Obama said much more eloquently when being faced with griping by some Congressional Republicans in reference to his stimulus plan:

‘I  WON !’ — President Barack Obama

That’s right ….. Elections have consequences ….. And thank God, in this case positive consequences, now that we have smart people in charge!

Message to Congressional Republicans:  We overwhelmingly elected President Obama and want him to do what he thinks is necessary to get us out of the ditch the Bush administration, with your help, has gotten us into.  If you want to continue to obstruct, we will vote you out in a heartbeat!

Ann Coulter Silenced – Temporarily!

When I first heard this story, I thought this would just have to be a joke.  The metaphor of one of the premier ‘Merchants of Hate’ being silenced because her jaw has been wired shut after breaking it, would be just too perfect for what’s going on with the extremist wing of the Republican party.  Now, I don’t wish anything bad on anybody, no matter how hateful that person is, and I wish her a speedy and full recovery.  But you just can’t make it up!  What a deeply symbolic meaning!  Knowing her, she will find a way to blame it on, you guessed it, Liberals, as soon as she can open her mouth again.  🙂

When I listen to the hateful diatribes of the likes of Ann Coulter, Sean Hannity or Rush Limbaugh (and I can only stomach a few minutes of it at a time), I always wonder how people like that can live with themselves.  There’s nothing wrong with disagreeing with somebody, criticizing another point of view, debating differences, and even making money off all that.  However, these ‘Merchants of Hate’ have made it their trademark to disrespect, destroy and demonize what they consider their nemesis (mainly:  open-minded, normal, nice, patriotic, compassionate LIBERALS and other people), calling us everything under the sun, from ‘unpatriotic’ to ‘communists’ to ‘traitors’ and on and on and on.  And they certainly share some responsibility for the hostile political environment of the past few years, starting before Clinton was even elected president in 1992.

Now with Barack Obama’s decisive victory, they have gotten their collective butts kicked and it will be interesting to see whether they will adjust to the new reality.  I’m not holding my breath, because ‘Hate’ sells well with right-wing, low-information voters.  So why change?  But I’m sitting here watching all this and smiling because I have a good feeling that they will find themselves in the political wilderness for a very long time, with or without a jaw wired shut.   🙂
